I have to admit it—I’m totally addicted to American Ninja Warrior. Whether it’s the awkwardly brilliant commentary from Akbar, or the jaw-dropping feats from the athletes, the action is riveting and inspirational.

And what adds to the appeal for me is the fact that the Warriors who excel and move on all have certain skill sets that have to align like a planetary anomaly. You could push all the weights you want, sprint like you have a grizzly bear chasing you, or climb like Mt. Everest is a walk in the park. But if all those abilities don’t combine at the right time in the right place and in the right way, you’ll find yourself doing your failure interview with Kristine Leahy!

In a very real sense, as Christians, we hold several things in common with the American Ninja Warriors.

So how do we make an epic show like American Ninja Warrior even more epic?

Easy! Just pit teams of the best of the best against a course AND each other at the same time!

Hence ANW 2.0—called Team Ninja Warrior.

Brent Steffensen and Evan Dollard and Kacy Catanzaro—oh my!

You know, watching Episode One of Team Ninja Warrior actually inspired a few thoughts that I would like to share with you, because in a very real sense, we hold several things in common with these elite human beings, even though you may not realize it.

In other words, let me spell out for you how you, too, are a Team Ninja Warrior!

First of all, if you are a Christ follower, you are in serious training:

We all know that when there’s a race, all the runners bolt for the finish line, but only one will take the prize. When you run, run for the prize! Athletes in training are very strict with themselves, exercising self-control over desires, and for what? For a wreath that soon withers or is crushed or simply forgotten. That is not our race. We run for the crown that we will wear for eternity. So I don’t run aimlessly. I don’t let my eyes drift off the finish line. When I box, I don’t throw punches in the air. I discipline my body and make it my slave so that after all this, after I have brought the gospel to others, I will still be qualified to win the prize (1 Corinthians 9:24-27, The Voice).

The Ninjas are physically training to run a short race and win an earthly prize, and we are engaged in spiritual training to run a lifelong race to win a heavenly prize. Both types of training require focus, discipline and a desire to achieve.

So rather than pump iron, we pray incessantly. Rather than run wind sprints, we follow the Holy Spirit’s leading. Rather than climb walls, we conquer sinful desires.

But that’s only half the equation, because like the Team Ninja Warriors, we also are competing alongside our teammates against a very formidable opponent:

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 6: 10-12, NIV).

We are engaged in spiritual training to run a lifelong race that requires focus, discipline and a desire to achieve.

Did you notice that the word “our” is one of the key concepts that Paul is going for here? Interestingly, when he wrote this verse, he was picturing a Roman soldier, and when the Roman army went into battle, they actually locked shields together to work as a team. And this is one of the reasons they were able to conquer most of the planet!

So it is with us—we are in a competition with our sinful nature and in a war with the Devil. But if we try this battle alone, we will epically fail.

So my friends, if you find any excitement and inspiration in watching Team Ninja Warrior, or you deep down dream about being one of the elite athletes who can jump over rivers and scale a warped wall—just remember that you are in training and you need your brothers and sisters in Christ to battle alongside you!

And best of all, if we stay focused and never give up the fight, we will cross the finish line of life and hear the greatest words we could ever hear from Jesus Christ:

“Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” (Matthew 25:21, NIV).

Flashpoint: Ignite Into Action

This week—and really for the rest of your life—stay in strict training with prayer and studying the Bible. Keep yourself away from the temptations that trip you up, and invest yourself in godly friendships that help you in your struggle with the forces of darkness.

Accelerant: Fuel for THE Cause

Pray:  Jesus, please help us keep our eyes fixed on You, so we can run for the prize and hear the words “well done, good and faithful servant” from You when we cross the finish line of life.

Read: Deuteronomy 31:6. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Get:  Spiritual Warfare 101. Just using the term “spiritual warfare” makes some people squirm a bit, but this battle is real. Throughout the New Testament the words used when discussing this topic describe a true struggle: fighting words, boxing verbs, even military imagery. This is a serious and intense war. Don’t leave your students unprepared! Help them understand the basics of spiritual warfare with this downloadable Youth Group 2 Go topical lesson. Just $4.99.

Just in case you haven’t gotten your fill of apocalyptic/alien invasion movies over the past few years, you now have a great opportunity to watch a mass destruction billion body count thriller that will have you nail biting from beginning to the end in The 5th Wave.

And have you noticed (and isn’t it ironic?) lately that the end times theme is increasingly more prevalent as we actually do, in fact, move closer to the real end times? It is almost as though humanity as a whole has a subconscious awareness of the coming final act, and we need to create art that reflects our anticipation and uneasiness surrounding the mystery of the last days.

Movies like The 5th Wave can oftentimes bring fear and worry about where Planet Earth is headed.

But for the Christ follower, our perspective can stand in sharp contrast to the general anxiety demonstrated by our culture, because—praise God—we have been given supernatural previews about what is really coming to Planet Earth when the final chapters begin to unfold!

So let me give you a trailer of what we might call the “Two Waves” from Scripture, and then we can talk about how we should respond.

Sadly, the Biblical picture of the first wave of the latter days is not a happy one. The Bible says that:

…in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly…But evil people and impostors will flourish. They will deceive others and will themselves be deceived (2 Timothy 3:1-5;13).

Yikes! That doesn’t even sound like a preview does it? Because it seems pretty obvious to me that we are already in this state of affairs.

But at some point in the future the second wave will hit:

For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died.

We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still living when the Lord returns will not meet him ahead of those who have died. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever (1 Thessalonians 4:14-17).

We have a supernatural preview of what is really coming to Planet Earth when the final chapters begin to unfold!

The second wave is actually incredibly encouraging—and even more mind-blowing than all the special effects in Hollywood combined! Jesus calls His followers to Himself, and eventually He establishes His Kingdom of love and righteousness that will never come to an end.

Nor will any alien force from whatever planet be able to conquer!

So what’s our response? Simple…

Knowing that one day all this will come to pass, think what sort of people you ought to be—how you should be living faithful and godly lives, waiting hopefully for and hastening the coming of God’s day when the heavens will vanish in flames and the elements melt away with intense heat. What will happen next, and what we hope for, is what God promised: a new heaven and a new earth where justice reigns (2 Peter 3:11-12, The Voice).

Movies like The 5th Wave can oftentimes bring fear and worry about where Planet Earth is headed. And without the truth of the Word of God—I can see why! But as Christ followers, we can fully trust and put our hope in the fact that while there are difficult times ahead, we ultimately end up under the rule of our Lord Jesus Christ in a new heaven and a new earth.

So the next time you look up at the sky, don’t fear waves of aliens, rather, look hopefully for the return of Jesus!

Flashpoint: Ignite Into Action

If your friends have read the book or go see the movie, pray for opportunities to start a spiritual conversation with them about the end of the world and how the Bible lays it out.

Accelerant: Fuel for THE Cause

Pray: Jesus, thank You for the promise of Your return! We pray that we would be hopeful and obedient to Your command to us to make disciples of all nations.

Read: Revelation 5:9.

And they sang a new song with these words:

“You are worthy to take the scroll
and break its seals and open it.
For you were slaughtered, and your blood has ransomed people for God
from every tribe and language and people and nation.”

It’s nearly unfathomable to me that a goofy, irreverent series that popped up in 1989 (and was highly criticized by much of Christianity) remains a pop culture force that now is near and dear to much of our nation!

Of course, I am talking about the one and only animated series called The Simpsons. They’re a middle class family living somewhere in the Midwest United States, and there is something for everyone in that Springfield universe.

If you’re a dad, you can very much relate to Homer. The joys and frustrations of parenting are so brilliantly portrayed through the man who genuinely prayed, “Dear God, give the bald guy a break. Amen.”

For a long time, I was embarrassed for Ned Flanders.

Or maybe you’re a fan of the blue-haired Marge, who keeps Homer on an even keel and dispenses great wisdom for moms of rebellious kids like Bart, or over-achieving ones like Lisa.

Speaking of which—maybe you’re a fan of them, as well? And if not, you can choose from Krusty the Clown, Dr. Hibbert, Moe the bartender, The Reverend Lovejoy or police chief Clancy Wiggum!

And for an astounding 27 years, this crew has been a comedic staple in Americana culture that has brought nearly as much insight into culture as it has laughter and amusement.

I bet you thought I left out one of the best characters—right? Nope, I was saving the best for last, because it looks likely that this will be his last season with the crew.

I’m talking about Nedward “Ned” Flanders, the lovable next “diddly door” neighbor. His often over-the-top religiosity and unwavering commitment to Christian dogma has established him as one of the most—if not THE most recognized fictional name in Christianity.

And, man, does he nail all the stereotypes—both good and bad. His favorite games are The Good Samaritan and Clothe the Leper. His doorbell plays “A Mighty Fortress” and his car horn blares the “Hallelujah Chorus.” He attends church three times a week, and he is the most honest person in Springfield.

And of course, this is why he is placed right next door to his polar opposite—Homer Simpson. The juxtaposition of these two characters and the clash of their worldviews may actually be one of the reasons why The Simpsons has been one of the longest running series in television history.

You know, for a long time I was embarrassed for Ned. I thought he gave Christianity a bad name, and any Christ follower who acted like him should cease and desist immediately.

But now after all these years, I’ve realized that I myself (and plenty of other believers) could use a good dose of Ned in our lives. Sure he can be cheesy and pushy—but really, when push comes to shove, Ned exhibits one of the most critical teachings of the Bible: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39).

Yet Ned exhibits one of the most critical teachings of the Bible: “Love your neighbor.”

This verse is pretty easy to handle when you live next door to folks who play well with others, but Homer has been nothing short of a thorn in the flash for St. Ned. From name calling to pranking to just downright cruelty, Ned has hung in there with Homer, even to the point of saving his life in dangerous circumstances.

Whenever I see Ned and his attitude towards Homer, this verse comes to mind:

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too (Philippians 2:3-4).

This season of the Simpsons will probably see the departure of Ned Flanders, but I hope that the legacy he leaves will be a willingness on all our parts to love our neighbors as ourselves—even if he or she is a person like Homer Simpson! And remember that according to Jesus, our “neighbor” is not defined by geographical proximity. Rather it is determined by the unity of humanity being made in God’s image! In other words, the question is not “who is my neighbor?” Because the real question is “who is not my neighbor?’ And the answer is…

Nobody! Everyone with whom you come into contact is your neighbor, and some may be nice and kind, and some may be a living example of the way Homer treats Ned.

And guess what? If the world is treating you like Ned, then BE like Ned!

Because…in this ever-darkening world, we could all use a few more “Hey-Diddly-Ho Neighbor-eenos!”

Flashpoint: Ignite Into Action

This week, think about how you are treating the people God brings across your path, and evaluate whether or not you are truly loving them as you love yourself.

Accelerant: Fuel for THE Cause

Pray:  Father, help us to see others through Your eyes so we can lead them into a relationship with Jesus.  May we consider others more important than ourselves for Your glory.

Read: John 12:26. Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.

Is there any chance you have heard Adele’s Hello? I’m guessing a solid yes—right? I’ve heard it on the radio, in Target, on the TV and in my sleep.

And collectively as of December 31, 2015, the world has viewed the video over 860,000,000 times! Which means that as a planet, we have invested 87,720,000 hours glued to Adele, which equates to over 34,000 years watching her saying hello from the other side.

I think Adele had us at hello—don’t you?

In that same stretch of the collective clock ticking, we could watch all 6 Star Wars films over 22 million times, or walk around the world 3000 times, or better yet read the entire Bible 186,000,000 times!

The world has viewed Adele’s Hello video over 860,000,000 times!

But I don’t think anyone who has seen the video or listened to this masterpiece would desire that time back, because Hello has obviously struck a major (and many minor) chords with pretty much the bulk of the civilized world.

But why?

In my opinion, the genius of the lyrics doesn’t lie in the apparent commonly used theme of a breakup/makeup romantic kind of thing. No, this song strikes at the heart of humanity at a deeper level, which is one reason Adele said she wrote the song:

“I’m so attached to my whole life here. I get worked up that I’m missing out on things. So Hello is about wanting to be at home and wanting to reach out to everyone I’ve ever hurt—including myself—and apologize for it.” (Source: songfacts.com)

In other words, one way to interpret the song is through a time-bending lens where Adele is calling her younger self (from a flip phone)…

Hello, it’s me.
I was wondering if after all these years you’d like to meet,
To go over everything.
They say that time’s supposed to heal ya,
But I ain’t done much healing.

Viewing the lyrics from that perspective sure introduces an intriguing scenario, doesn’t it? It is obvious that Adele views at least some of her past with great pain and regret, as would most of us. Perhaps this is why the song has obliterated every download and views records, because to be human is to make mistakes, and the mistakes we make, make us a remorseful species indeed.

So what would you tell your younger self if you had a chance? Would you like to meet with him or her?

To be human is to make mistakes, and the mistakes we make, make us remorseful.

Unfortunately—or perhaps fortunately—none of us will ever be able to do that. But this doesn’t mean that pondering such a conversation would be a waste of time, by any means. A reflection of our past can reap great insight into how we plan and live in the future, which is why God’s Word gives us this “hello from the other side” story from thousands of years ago:

When the whole nation was finally across, God spoke to Joshua: “Select twelve men from the people, a man from each tribe, and tell them, ‘From right here, the middle of the Jordan where the feet of the priests are standing firm, take twelve stones. Carry them across with you and set them down in the place where you camp tonight.’”

Joshua called out the twelve men whom he selected from the People of Israel, one man from each tribe. Joshua directed them, “Cross to the middle of the Jordan and take your place in front of the Chest of God, your God. Each of you heft a stone to your shoulder, a stone for each of the tribes of the People of Israel, so you’ll have something later to mark the occasion. When your children ask you, ‘What are these stones to you?’ you’ll say, ‘The flow of the Jordan was stopped in front of the Chest of the Covenant of God as it crossed the Jordan—stopped in its tracks. These stones are a permanent memorial for the People of Israel’” (Joshua 4:1-7, The Message).

When God’s people entered the Promised Land that God provided for them, they were commanded by The Lord to pick out a “stone of remembrance” to mark the historic event when God miraculously parted the Jordan River so they could enter the land they so desperately desired and needed for their nation.

And my friends, I’m certain that you could also look back in your past—whether it be this last year—or the last 10 years—and remember circumstances where God has delivered you.  It is critical that you keep track of these memories and even mark them with your own “stone of remembrance,” so that in the future when you are discouraged, you can find strength and hope in those reflections on the past.

From a human perspective, we might be tempted to say hello to our past selves with a heavy tone of regret. But with Jesus Christ and His forgiveness and faithfulness, we can tell the younger us that God has forgiven and redeemed our mistakes, and He will keep us to the very end!

Flashpoint: Ignite Into Action

What a great way to start the New Year—with stones of remembrance! This week, instead of a resolution, find an object that will remind you of God’s faithfulness, and put it somewhere you will see it and be reminded that Jesus has paid the price for your regrets and failures!

Accelerant: Fuel for THE Cause

Pray:  Jesus, thank You for saying “It is finished”, so that we can be finished with our regrets and mistakes as well. We commit this New Year to You, and ask that we would love You and follow You with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.

Read: Proverbs 2:1-5.
My child, listen to what I say,
and treasure my commands.
Tune your ears to wisdom,
and concentrate on understanding.
Cry out for insight,
and ask for understanding.
Search for them as you would for silver;
seek them like hidden treasures.
Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord,
and you will gain knowledge of God.

So what are you waiting for?

I’m asking because I would guess that there is at least one thing—and maybe more—that you are waiting for right now—correct?

It sure seems like we humans spend a lot of our lives waiting. Here’s how the great Dr. Seuss put it in Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

Waiting for a train to go
or a bus to come, or a plane to go
or the mail to come, or the rain to go
or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow
or waiting around for a Yes or a No
or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.

Studies show that the average person will spend 43 days of a lifetime waiting on hold for customer service, and we will also spend six months of our lives just waiting in line!

But when Christmas rolls around, I am reminded that not all waiting is bad. Of course, this time of year we anxiously anticipate the gifts, the food and the time off from school, but might I suggest you add one more item to the waiting list?

No, not Santa…but Jesus Christ!

We humans spend a lot of our lives waiting.

But wait, you say. Didn’t He already come to earth, and like, that’s why we are celebrating Christmas in the first place?

And you would be spot-on. His first coming is called the First Advent. Advent means “the arrival of a notable person,” and there never has been or will be a more notable Person than Jesus. He is the basis for how we count the years on our calendars, and He is the reason for this entire season. Two thousand years ago, He arrived in a humble manger as a helpless baby, attended by impoverished teenage parents and essentially homeless shepherds.

He arrived to a nation who had been waiting for a promised Savior for thousands of years. They had been persecuted, enslaved and even murdered as a people anticipating their Messiah, and with the First Advent, the waiting was over.

But the story goes on, my friends. You see, now we who follow Jesus are waiting for the Second Advent. This most notable Person will arrive again!

Matthew 16:27:  For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done.

Mark 14:61-62:  Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Acts 1:11: “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

Hebrews 9:28
: So also Christ was offered once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him.

Matthew 24:42
: “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.”

But when Christmas rolls around, I am reminded that not all waiting is bad.

Much like Israel of old, we, as Christ followers, also are in a waiting place for the coming of Jesus Christ. And this time He will not arrive in the middle of nowhere with no widespread awareness. The Second Advent will be the appearance of the Risen Christ, accompanied by a host of angels, and the entire world will witness it!

Will you be ready? Will your friends be ready? What better time of year to tell others about Jesus the Messiah and why He is called the Savior of the World!!

So this Christmas as you remember the First Advent of Jesus Christ, rejoice in the fact that He paid the penalty for our sins and redeemed us from hell. And while you are in the “waiting place,” turn your thoughts to the Second Advent and tell your friends and family who don’t know Jesus personally about the real reason for this joy-filled Season.

A long time ago in a movie theater far, far away…

I went to see the original Star Wars movie. I was a young kid at the time, but in retrospect it has become one of my most cherished memories. Up until the unveiling of this film, the whole genre of fantasy/science-fiction/adventure was a veritable wasteland of cheesy endeavors that made you want a refund.

Ah, but in Star Wars we have an opening scene with a rebel ship being pursued and fired upon by an Imperial Battle Cruiser, and from that moment on, your eyes and senses are glued to this fantastic universe where good battles evil in the context of The Force.

“There is a God and there is a good and bad side.”—George Lucas

Now, 38 years later (like I said…a long time ago), one of the biggest movie release perhaps in the history of the celluloid industry is The Force Awakens. A whole new generation of Star Wars aficionados will be generated, and we will anxiously anticipate the final two installments of this immortal series.

But in the meantime, have you ever thought about what we can learn about God from The Force? Many may quickly dismiss even considering this possibility, but I would like to offer a few thoughts that might alter that perception.

First, if you look deep enough into the dialogue of the series, there are some really cool parallels with Biblical truth. For example:

Luke Skywalker: May The Force be with you.
The Bible: May the Lord be with you.

Obi-Wan: The Force will be with you…always
Jesus: And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20).

Watching and reflecting on Star Wars through the years, and particularly focusing on the constant and abiding presence of The Force has been an ongoing reminder of the great truth that God will never leave us or forsake us.

Still, there are some stark and significant differences. One of these is the personal nature of the God of the Bible vs. the impersonal nature of The Force. By this I mean that it is one thing to be comforted by a Force that “surrounds us and binds us together,” but it is a much greater and more profound thing to know that our Triune God indwells our hearts through the Holy Spirit, and because of that, we are never abandoned or alone in this world.

Here’s the way King David expressed this certainty:

God, investigate my life;
get all the facts firsthand.
I’m an open book to you;
even from a distance, you know what I’m thinking.
You know when I leave and when I get back;
I’m never out of your sight.
You know everything I’m going to say
before I start the first sentence.
I look behind me and you’re there,
then up ahead and you’re there, too—
your reassuring presence, coming and going.
This is too much, too wonderful—
I can’t take it all in!

Is there anyplace I can go to avoid your Spirit?
to be out of your sight?
If I climb to the sky, you’re there!
If I go underground, you’re there!
If I flew on morning’s wings
to the far western horizon,
You’d find me in a minute—
you’re already there waiting!
Then I said to myself, “Oh, he even sees me in the dark!
At night I’m immersed in the light!”
It’s a fact: darkness isn’t dark to you;
night and day, darkness and light, they’re all the same to you
(Psalm 139:1-12, The Message).

Our Triune God indwells our hearts and because of that, we are never alone in this world.

And speaking of dark and light, that is the other critical reality that the Star Wars series has brought to center stage. That’s why George Lucas made this statement: “All I was trying to say in a very simple and straightforward way is that there is a God and there is a good and bad side” (Source: Cinema & New Media Arts). One of his motivations in making the Star Wars series was to counter the pervasive morally relativistic thinking of that generation—which obviously is still alive and well in the 21st century.

And the Bible makes it very clear that there is a “good side and bad side” as well, and you are either engaged in one or the other at all times. Check out Jesus’ words to the Apostle Paul on the road to Damascus:

“I’m sending you off to open the eyes of the outsiders so they can see the difference between dark and light, and choose light, see the difference between Satan and God, and choose God. I’m sending you off to present my offer of sins forgiven, and a place in the family, inviting them into the company of those who begin real living by believing in me” (Acts 26:17-18, The Message).

I hope you enjoy The Force Awakens. But even more so, I hope you realize that we have a God who is with us…always. And we fight in an intense battle between darkness and light. So as you step out of the theater, step into the very real storyline that makes a very real difference both for now and into eternity!

Flashpoint: Ignite Into Action

This week, reflect on the truth that the Holy Spirit indwells your heart so that you can be aware of God’s presence and full of His power to follow His will. Keep your eyes open to the battle around you, and live like a Christian Jedi!

Pray: Father, thank You for Your constant love and abiding presence. Empower us to open the eyes of our friends so they can enter into a relationship with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Read: 1 Peter 2:9.  But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light (NLT).

Of course there is a new Christmas themed movie out, as there seems to be every year. And this one is as chock-full of talented actors and actresses as an overstuffed stocking hanging on the fireplace mantle.

But will you love the Coopers? Maybe, maybe not. Not that Love the Coopers doesn’t have a few entertaining moments, but the bottom line is that the movie has an identity crisis (like many of the characters) between drama and comedy, and the ensuing conflict robs the magic out of both genres.

Sometimes we feel like “re-gifting” a particular family member to someone else’s family!

Yet for all the movie’s faults, its tagline speaks volumes of truth: “You can’t re-gift family.”

As you probably already know, re-gifting is the relationally questionable practice of taking something you’ve been given but personally dislike, then re-wrapping it as a “gift” to someone else.

And sometimes we feel like that would be a good option for some of our family members—right? Like gifts, we didn’t get to choose our family. And we’ve probably all felt at some time or other that our lives would be so much easier if we could just “re-gift” some our more “challenging” family members in a nice little package to some other family.

But unfortunately—or maybe fortunately—we just can’t do that. Not legally, anyway.

And you know what? That’s probably a good thing? Why? Because God has placed us in our families for a very specific and important reason! The ups and downs, the highs the lows, the good times AND the bad times are all a part of God shaping and molding us for the future He has in mind for us.

Want a perfect example? I got one for you—and it’s from a family whose dysfunction makes the Coopers problems look like minor nuisances.

The family I’m talking about is Joseph—not the father of Jesus—but the one from the Old Testament.  His family tree involved one dad who had 12 kids from 4 different women! As if that wouldn’t cause enough drama, Jospeh added to it by telling his family about his recurring dreams of how he would rule over all of them one day.  And to make matters worse, his dad played total favorites with him, not only by throwing more affection his way, but by putting him in charge of all his brothers—even though he was the youngest.

So the brothers get ticked enough to beat the stuffing out of him and ditch poor Joseph in a pit. He was then picked up by slave traders and sent to Egypt, where God favored him so much that he rose to the second most powerful position in the entire nation!

You can’t re-gift your family, but you can re-package your past and re-imagine your future.

Because of his promotion and God-given wisdom, Joseph was able to save the population of Egypt and his family from an epic famine and certain starvation.

Of course his brothers thought he was long dead, so when he revealed his identity to them, you might have expected some very bitter words from Joseph towards the dysfunctional family who’d betrayed him and caused unspeakable pain in his life.

And what were those bitter words? Check them out:

Don’t be afraid. Am I to judge instead of God? It is not my place. Even though you intended to harm me, God intended it only for good, and through me, He preserved the lives of countless people, as He is still doing today. So don’t worry. I will provide for you myself—for you and your children (Genesis 50:19-20, The Voice).

Isn’t this amazing? His family had mistreated him more badly than most, if not all, of us will ever experience, and yet Joseph saw the big picture of how God took the dysfunction and turned it into transformation through forgiveness…

…The man Joseph was transformed because of his forgiveness.

…The family of Jacob was transformed because of forgiveness.

…The nation of Egypt was transformed because of forgiveness.

And so may you also be transformed, my friends, by the power of forgiveness. God has set you within your family for a purpose, but that can only be accomplished by you letting go of all the hurts and disappointments and scars from the past. What family members have intended for harm, God can redeem for His good purposes.

While you can’t re-gift your family, you can re-package your past and re-imagine your future!

From the Paris bombings, to the Mali hostages, to the Brussels terrorism high alert, it seems that every news website and TV news program brings a stark reminder of God’s assessment of humanity from thousands of years ago:

God saw that human evil was out of control. People thought evil, imagined evil—evil, evil, evil from morning to night. God was sorry that he had made the human race in the first place; it broke his heart…

…As far as God was concerned, the Earth had become a sewer; there was violence everywhere. God took one look and saw how bad it was, everyone corrupt and corrupting—life itself corrupt to the core (Genesis 6:5-6; 11-12, The Message).

When we focus on Christ instead of carnage, we can experience the peace of Christ.

These observations from the mind of God came from what He witnessed on earth just before the flood. As you probably know, the corruption of humanity had spun itself so recklessly out of control that the Creator had to re-create His creation! So Noah and his family were chosen to preserve mankind.

And as you also probably know, God promised not to destroy the earth again by flood, but He did promise that He was coming back! That’s why Jesus gave this warning:

Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all (Luke 17:26-27, NIV).

The context of these verses is Jesus detailing the conditions that will be prevalent on earth just prior to His return. It’s fascinating to me that He makes a comparison between that time and “the days of Noah” when evil was rampant and truth was rejected.

Of course Jesus could return at any time, but it seems quite possible that His coming might be closer than we sometimes expect!

So how should the Christ followers behave? Well, we should be obedient to what God’s Word tells us:

Let’s share the hope we carry in our hearts with everyone around us!

Since everything here today might well be gone tomorrow, do you see how essential it is to live a holy life? Daily expect the Day of God, eager for its arrival. The galaxies will burn up and the elements melt down that day—but we’ll hardly notice. We’ll be looking the other way, ready for the promised new heavens and the promised new earth, all landscaped with righteousness.

So, my dear friends, since this is what you have to look forward to, do your very best to be found living at your best, in purity and peace. Interpret our Master’s patient restraint for what it is: salvation (2 Peter 3:11-16, The Message).

What it all comes down to is perspective. Our focus needs to be centered on the amazing vision of the new heavens and the new earth. Then our own world will not be overrun with fear of terrorist violence and life’s multitude of other uncertainties, rather it will be filled with the peace and presence of God and the unconditional love with which He extends an invitation to trust in His Son Jesus. When we focus on Christ instead of carnage, we find ourselves at rest and excited about Jesus’ return.

So come step away from fear and inner turmoil, and enter into a world of “living at your best, in purity and in peace”!

Flashpoint: Ignite Into Action

The world may sometimes seem chaotic and filled with terror or threats of terror, but we can experience the peace of Christ that passes understanding and share the hope we carry in our hearts with everyone around us.

Pray:  Jesus, thank You that one day You are returning to set things right. Help us set our eyes on the new heavens and new earth, and help us to live lives of peace and share Your message with others while we wait for You to come back.

Read: Matthew 24:30-31. And then at last, the sign that the Son of Man is coming will appear in the heavens, and there will be deep mourning among all the peoples of the earth. And they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with the mighty blast of a trumpet, and they will gather his chosen ones from all over the world—from the farthest ends of the earth and heaven.

Have you ever done any research into the first Thanksgiving? Pretty fascinating how incredibly different it was than most of us have pictured in our minds.

A short list of differences:

  1. No turkey – probably ate deer
  2. No fruits – just onions, beans, lettuce, spinach, cabbage, carrots
  3. No corn on the cob – rather they had cornmeal
  4. No pumpkin pie – just hollowed out pumpkins with custard…ew

And most surprisingly, no women! Sure enough they did the cooking, but this was more of a military alliance that was guys only.

Gratitude provides a boatload (Pilgrim pun intended) of benefits.

But over the years, the turkey/cranberry/football galactic alliance has successfully pulled off our modern day-eat ’till you explode-tryptophan-overdose-football holiday.

And you probably love it just as much as I do—right?

There is one “item,” if you will, that was present at the first Thanksgiving that has endured over the years, and I hope that it shows up at your table this year.

What is this mysterious element I speak of? See if you can identify it from what was probably the prayer offered at the first Thanksgiving:

O Lord our God and heavenly Father, which of Thy unspeakable mercy towards us, hast provided meate and drinke for the nourishment of our weake bodies. Grant us peace to use them reverently, as from Thy hands, with thankful hearts: let Thy blessing rest upon these Thy good creatures, to our comfort and sustentation: and grant we humbly beseech Thee, good Lord, that as we doe hunger and thirst for this food of our bodies, so our soules may earnestly long after the food of eternal life, through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour, Amen. (Source: pilgrimhallmuseum.org)

Wow! First off, don’t you just love the way they spelled and phrased words and sentences? I know we all speak so good nowadays, but sometimes I wisheth that we still spoketh in such an honorific manner.

And secondly, you probably noticed that being thankful is the theme. Thankfulness was served and given in abundance at the first Thanksgiving, as it should be served and given in abundance at your table this year.

Why?

Well…from just a scientific viewpoint, gratitude provides a boatload (Pilgrim pun intended) of benefits that include better mental and physical health, better sleep, more friendships, stronger relationships, and a boost to your self esteem!

Make an attitude of gratitude a permanent part of your daily routine.

Perhaps that’s why in the Bible we are instructed to be thankful dozens and dozens of times—because God gave us gratitude as the key to a contented life and relationship to Him!

So…how thankful are you? If you find yourself needing some help, here are two key verses about thankfulness that will get you started:

And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 5:20).

I can give thanks for many things, but do I give thanks for everything? This verse tells us that God allows the temptations and trials of our lives to keep our eyes on Him, and the only way to do that is to be thankful for everything- even the tough stuff.

Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

People ask all the time: “What is God’s will for my life?” I can’t speak to what God’s yet unrevealed will is for anyone, but I can direct everyone to this verse.  In a nutshell, God’s revealed will for you is to find joy in everything, pray about everything, and be thankful for everything. When our focus is on being thankful, then we will have clear eyes and minds to see what God really wants for our lives.

But when we aren’t thankful, we let our circumstances drive us down. And worst of all, our discernment for God’s will gets clouded in our self-pity and anxiety over our lives.

So this Thanksgiving, give thanks! And the day after Thanksgiving, give thanks again! Can you imagine how your life would change if the attitude of gratitude became a permanent part of your daily routine?

Picture each day as a Thanksgiving feast—but instead of turkey and pies, you have thankfulness and praise!

Psalm 95:2.
Let us come to him with thanksgiving.
Let us sing psalms of praise to him.

Make Thanksgiving like the first Thanksgiving, with praise and gratitude for Jesus Christ and all He has done for you, then take that attitude with you each day!

Would you rather live in this world or the world of Hunger Games?

Tough question, I believe, because on the one hand, living here seems so much better than the dark and desperate Districts in that world, wouldn’t you agree?

Panem is a vivid picture of what truly lies behind the lights and glitter of our world.

But on the other hand, there is something so stark and real about Panem (which is post-apocalyptic America) that concurrently attracts you and disgusts you. I’m not sure I would ever want to live there, but the development of this story is so fascinating, it makes it tempting.

When I reflect on the arc of the Hunger Games narrative as it draws to a close, it occurred to me that while it is not a Christian story per se, it illustrates two very key Biblical principles upon which we would be wise to focus.

Principle #1:  We are all fallen creatures.

Panem is a vivid picture of what truly lies behind the façade of the lights and glitter of our world, which is the absolute and utter fallenness and sinfulness of humanity. Here’s the way the Bible put it:

The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil (Genesis 6:5).

The godly people have all disappeared; not one honest person is left on the earth. They are all murderers, setting traps even for their own brothers. Both their hands are equally skilled at doing evil! Officials and judges alike demand bribes. The people with influence get what they want, and together they scheme to twist justice (Micah 7:2-3).

Doesn’t this sound exactly like Panem? But God is describing OUR world. True, we don’t have Hunger Games where children kill other children, but we do sell our young ones for the slave trade, and they are kidnapped and forced to become child soldiers, so I’m kinda wondering—which is worse?

And lest we become quick to judge, remember that “fallen humanity” includes both you and me as participants!

If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth…If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts (1 John 1:8,10).

Bottom line is that both Panem and Planet Earth are depraved, deceitful and death-dealing on a regular basis. But remember, there is a second principle!

When we rise to our calling and stand against evil, our efforts will make a difference now and forever!

Principle #2: We all have a risen Savior.

In Panem, Katniss is a “savior” of sorts, but even if she completely succeeds in her mission to overthrow the Capital and assassinate President Snow, I suspect that the victory will inevitably be corrupted by another power seeker. Another dictator will arise who will again enslave, and there will need to be another rebellion with another Mockingjay, and that cycle will never end.

But in our world, we have a Savior who conquered all sin and death on the cross, then came back from the dead to prove that this victory will last for eternity!  Here is the amazing news from the Bible:

You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross (Colossians 2:13-15).

It is no small thing that even though our world is fallen and evil routinely rears its ugly head, we have a Redeemer who sacrificed His own life to bring an end to the tyranny of Satan and his demonic forces. Jesus shed His blood so we can be empowered to make a difference against injustice not only now, but for eternity! The evil kingdoms of this world which produce tyrants and slavery, and wars will come and go like the passing of seasons. But all that we do for the Kingdom of Christ spills over into a new heaven and a new earth that will never pass away.

So while we walk this dark world, the odds may not be in our favor from a human standpoint. But when we rise to our calling and stand against evil—like Katniss has done in Panem—our efforts will make a difference now and forever!

And the odds of that happening are definitely in our favor!

How would you feel if you were Superman’s little cousin? To have the same powers of X-Ray, heat vision, etc.—which effectively renders you invincible—would make life extremely interesting.

Some of you may realize that I am talking about Supergirl, a new CBS series starring Melissa Benoist, that has received critical acclaim and high viewership. It’s an intriguing story about Kara Zor-El, who was Fed-Exed off Krypton to earth much like Superman.

Except in her case, she had to hide her powers until she reached her 20’s, and now she is gainfully employed by a super cool, super secret agency and she is saving National City (like Metropolis—only with Palm trees) from terrible disasters.

At this point, you might expect me to make some Bible parallel between Superman and Supergirl with us as Christians—right? And to be sure, we are indwelled by the Holy Spirit of God, so we do possess unfathomable spiritual power to be used in reaching people for Christ.

Supergirl’s and Superman’s courageous, heroic acts actually remind me of how cowardly I am.

But I would like to consider a different take on Supergirl

Why? Because when I watch movies about the Man of Steel, or shows about the Girl of Steel, I actually don’t feel super empowered.

To be honest, I feel super tired!

I see them performing heroic acts with undaunted courage and seemingly endless energy, and it reminds me of how cowardly I handle situations and how exhausted I feel so much of the time.

I guess you could say that tiredness is my Kryptonite—right?

But one day, while wallowing in a semi-state of self-pity, I came across this fantastic passage:

To keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud.

Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:7b-10

These inspired verses were written by the Apostle Paul, who started churches all over Asia and wrote over 75% of the New Testament! Some might have called him the “super Apostle,” but in this surprisingly candid passage, we see that he too struggled with his own version of Kryptonite that kept him from becoming proud.

Isn’t it interesting that he asked Jesus three times to take his weakness away—yet our Lord refused his request? That must mean something very important, because most of us would be pretty frustrated with unanswered prayers.

But Jesus gave Paul the answer: “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.”

In other words, when we are foolish enough to think that we can handle and control our lives, we walk away from the most powerful force in the universe. And that is why we falter and fail and end up exhausted.

Don’t walk away from the most powerful force in the universe!

But when we embrace our Kryptonite and our weakness, it changes our perspective back onto Jesus Christ. At that moment, He grants us unsurpassed power from the Throne of Heaven, and we can be renewed.

The word for “best” in this verse literally means that the power of Christ grows as our weaknesses are increased. So in reality—the weaker we are—the stronger He is!

So if you are feeling more like the man or woman of cardboard, instead of steel this week, and your personal Kryptonite is debilitating to the point of near exhaustion, remember that it might be a message from God to rest in His presence and power. Take some time to relax, renew, and refresh in the charisma of His company, and you will personally experience the incredible promise given to us through the prophet Isaiah:

Have you never heard?

Have you never understood?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of all the earth.
He never grows weak or weary.
No one can measure the depths of his understanding.
He gives power to the weak
and strength to the powerless.
Even youths will become weak and tired,
and young men will fall in exhaustion.
But those who trust in the will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint (Isaiah 40:28-31).

Bond…James Bond.

Wouldn’t you love to introduce yourself that way? Or at least meet Agent 007, the legendary character who has inspired 23 films over the last 50 years!

Think about it, if you are a teenager, then your grandparents probably went to see a Bond movie back in the day. And as well, the original actor who played the first Bond (Sean Connery) could BE your grandpa!

But here we are in 2015, with Daniel Craig’s steely blue-eyed gaze that penetrates the hearts of the good, the bad and the ugly in his explosion-a-minute world. In this latest release, he comes face to face with an organization called SPECTRE, which stands for: Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion.

Man—I would love to be James Bond for a day.

You gotta give these guys props for being very straightforward with their motives — right? Basically this is a global terrorist organization with no political alliances made up of characters from The Gestapo, The Mafia, drug cartels and a host of other groups that don’t play well with others.

But when they play together, they wreak havoc on people and property in a very “specter”-like fashion (spectre is the British spelling for specter—meaning “ghost”— get it?)

Enter James Bond—a man armed and ready to foil the evil plans of SPECTRE and bring justice for their victims. He is a powerhouse combination of brains and brawn, and he is fearless in the face of danger.

Man—I would love to be James Bond for a day. I’d love to come face to face with an eeeeeeevil SPECTRE agent and take him down to Prisontown—wouldn’t you?

But wait…if you and I are followers of Christ, we are faced with the battle between good and evil on a spiritual level each and every day. Our enemy is not SPECTRE, but it is a much more powerful array of forces drawn together under the leadership of SATAN.

And when we feel discouraged or overwhelmed in the battle, we can gain great hope from this amazing encounter:

They sailed on to the country of the Gerasenes, directly opposite Galilee. As he stepped out onto land, a madman from town met him; he was a victim of demons. He hadn’t worn clothes for a long time, nor lived at home; he lived in the cemetery. When he saw Jesus he screamed, fell before him, and bellowed, “What business do you have messing with me? You’re Jesus, Son of the High God, but don’t give me a hard time!” (The man said this because Jesus had started to order the unclean spirit out of him.) Time after time the demon threw the man into convulsions. He had been placed under constant guard and tied with chains and shackles, but crazed and driven wild by the demon, he would shatter the bonds.

Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”

“Mob. My name is Mob,” he said, because many demons afflicted him. And they begged Jesus desperately not to order them to the bottomless pit.

A large herd of pigs was browsing and rooting on a nearby hill. The demons begged Jesus to order them into the pigs. He gave the order. It was even worse for the pigs than for the man. Crazed, they stampeded over a cliff into the lake and drowned (Luke 8:26-33, The Message).

Amazing—right? Jesus comes face to face with a man who has the strength of The Hulk and a host of powerful demons.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that people are the problem.

But the Son of God need only speak a word, and the evil was blown away like a leaf in a tornado. The man was freed from Satan’s power, and if you read the rest of his story, he went back to his hometown and became a powerful witness for Jesus.

Did you know that the same power Jesus used to cast out the demons lives in you? The Holy Spirit indwells your soul, therefore through Him you have the power to blow away evil as well!

But don’t make the mistake that many Christians make—thinking that people are the problem. No, the evil we fight is spiritual in nature and demonic in origin. So the “weapons” we use are things like the Word of God, prayer and faith that God will be victorious.

So if you aren’t feeling as bold as Bond lately in your efforts against the powers of darkness, remember the power of Jesus and the tools He has given us to be effective “agents” in the overthrow of the Kingdom of Darkness.

And may your heart be shaken—not just stirred—for THE Cause!

Flashpoint: Ignite Into Action

Let’s take a cue from 007 to be motivated in our efforts to be used by Jesus!  If Jesus can cast out a mob of demons in one man, think about what He can do in your situation!

Accelerant: Fuel for THE Cause

Pray:  Father, thank You for Your power over all evil and the Kingdom of darkness.  Help us be bold and confident in the calling you’ve placed on our lives.

Read: Ephesians 6:10-12. A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
